Short Short Reflection 68

Availability Is Not the Same as Care

Reflection 68 · On Boundaries

1-min read · Looking Inward

Modern communication allows us to remain reachable almost everywhere. For executives, availability can feel like responsibility. Responding quickly signals commitment, and being included in every issue can create the impression that we are protecting the organisation.

But constant availability is not the same as thoughtful presence.

I have learned that without boundaries, attention becomes fragmented and relationships receive only the part of us that remains after every interruption.

Boundaries do not mean caring less. They allow us to decide when work deserves full attention, when family deserves it, and when the mind needs to become quiet enough to recover perspective.

AI may help manage more demands. It should not make unlimited access to a person the new definition of leadership.

Being available to everyone at every moment may eventually leave us fully present for no one.
