Short Short Reflection 62

Leave Something Unoptimised

Reflection 62 · On Spaciousness

1-min read · Looking Inward

We are increasingly encouraged to optimise everything. Our schedules, finances, sleep, exercise, attention and even relationships can be measured and improved.

I appreciate the clarity that good information provides. But I have also learned that not every part of life becomes better when managed for maximum output.

A walk without a destination may appear inefficient. A conversation without an agenda may produce no visible result. Time spent doing something simply because it brings quiet satisfaction may not improve any dashboard. Yet these spaces often restore parts of us that productivity cannot reach.

The intelligent age will offer more ways to optimise our lives. Wisdom may require knowing which parts should remain free from optimisation altogether.

A sustainable life needs structure. It also needs room for what has no measurable purpose.

Not everything valuable needs to become more efficient; some things become valuable because we allow them to remain unhurried.
