Every decision creates two outcomes. The one you choose, and the one you leave behind. In an environment that celebrates optimisation, we tend to speak of decisions as if they were problems with correct answers. Yet the most consequential choices I have watched executive teams make have never been about finding the perfect answer.
They have been about understanding the trade-offs we are willing to accept. Because every opportunity comes with a cost — capital that will not be deployed elsewhere, futures that will not be pursued, alternatives that will remain unlived. Strategic maturity is the ability to see both outcomes clearly — not just the one you prefer.
So the real question is not “What should we choose?”. It is “Which cost are we choosing?”. Every strategy is a choice. Every choice has a trade-off. The leaders who create lasting value are those who make peace with the second outcome — and move forward with clarity about what they have consciously chosen to give up.
Every decision creates two outcomes. The one you choose, and the one you leave behind.
