A reflection on why the most valuable health intelligence may not be the fastest treatment, but the earliest and most humane prevention.
Thailand's healthcare strength is often visible inside hospitals. The next national opportunity is to build intelligence before people reach the hospital.
Digital health systems can connect clinical records, public-health information, telemedicine and disease surveillance. WHO's work with Thailand includes the convergence of digital-health platforms and health-information systems, while its regional strategy recognises AI and interoperable systems as important parts of future healthcare.
But digitising hospital operations is not the same as creating a healthier population. Thailand should use intelligence to detect risk earlier, support primary care and help individuals make better decisions before conditions become severe and expensive.
The system could connect local clinics, pharmacists, community health volunteers, laboratories, hospitals, public-health agencies, and patients managing chronic conditions at home.
AI may help identify patterns that require attention. But prevention cannot be reduced to sending more automated warnings. People respond to health information through family relationships, trust, beliefs, language and previous experience with institutions. A technically accurate recommendation may be ignored if it feels impersonal, confusing or disconnected from daily life.
This is where the cultural findings from my research remain relevant. Technology must fit the social environment in which behaviour occurs. Health systems should be designed with communities and frontline professionals rather than transferred to them after the main decisions have already been made.
Privacy is also central. Health data is among the most personal information a society holds. Greater integration should therefore be matched by clearer consent, strong security, limited access and meaningful responsibility when systems fail.
The strategic objective should not be to create the hospital with the most AI. It should be to create a country where intelligence helps more people remain healthy, receive support earlier and navigate care with dignity.
The most valuable health intelligence may not be the system that treats illness faster, but the system that helps prevent avoidable suffering earlier.
