Technology has always promised convenience. Faster communication, easier transactions, immediate access and reduced effort are usually treated as signs of progress.
Artificial intelligence takes this promise further. It can anticipate what we need, complete unfinished sentences, summarise what we have not read, choose routes, schedule meetings, answer questions and remove many small difficulties from daily life.
This can be enormously beneficial. But not every form of friction is harmful. Some difficulties serve a developmental purpose.
Waiting teaches patience. Disagreement teaches negotiation. Searching teaches curiosity. Writing teaches clarity. Solving a problem teaches persistence. Remembering teaches attention. Making a mistake teaches humility.
When technology removes friction, it may also remove the learning hidden inside the friction.
Consider writing. An AI system can produce a polished document within seconds. This saves time, but the act of writing is not only about producing words. Writing forces a person to organise thoughts, discover contradictions and decide what they actually believe. When the final text appears before the thinking has occurred, the output may improve while the thinker remains unchanged.
The same is true in leadership. An AI system may recommend the best response to a difficult employee, but leadership capacity develops through experiencing uncertainty, interpreting emotion and accepting responsibility for imperfect decisions. If every difficult interaction is mediated by a machine, people may become more efficient without becoming more mature.
This does not mean that we should preserve unnecessary inconvenience. Many forms of friction are wasteful, exclusionary or harmful. Technology should reduce administrative burden, prevent avoidable error and make essential services more accessible.
The challenge is to distinguish between friction that wastes human potential and friction that develops human capability. A frictionless environment may create comfort, but resilience often develops through manageable difficulty.
This matters in education, where students can now obtain answers before they have struggled with the question. It matters in business, where employees may receive recommendations before learning how to analyse the situation. It matters in personal life, where personalised systems reduce exposure to discomfort, disagreement and uncertainty.
The intelligent age should not aim to make human beings incapable of difficulty. The goal should be to remove meaningless obstacles while preserving meaningful challenge.
The best use of AI may not always be to provide the answer. Sometimes it may be to ask a better question, reveal a blind spot or help a person continue thinking when they would otherwise give up. Technology should support the development of capability, not merely the completion of tasks.
A society that eliminates every inconvenience may eventually discover that it has also weakened patience, adaptability and courage.
Not every difficulty is a defect in the system. Some forms of friction are where human capability is formed.
